Great Turn Out For March Yoga Happy Hour

It was a bit on the coolish side last night for the second Yoga Happy Hour this season but we had a group of about 15-20 brave souls who joined us for a wonderful session with Faith Bevans from Flow Yoga. We were excited to learn that several members of the New Port Richey Women’s Fitness & Social Over 40 meetup group decided to add us to their events this month. Thanks ladies!

Local blogger, Christopher Davis, dropped by as well to get some pics and details for his blog on the New Port Richey Patch. So, be looking for that in the very near future. Thanks to everyone who came out to support this activity–we love seeing our neighbors getting out to meet new friends and enjoying our great City.

We have been receiving requests to continue Yoga Happy Hour through the summer and more often. This is a goal for the committee, however there are expenses associated with hosting this free event, so we are seeking sponsors to help us expand our schedule. The Spring Free For All: Movies in the Park is Saturday, March 23 in Sims Park and the Crystal Bowl Meditation Experience takes place Saturday, March 30 inside Peace Hall. The next Yoga Happy Hour will be Tuesday, April 9 at Cavalaire Square. We look forward to seeing you out and about!

The Show Must Go On

Our first movie of the season lined up perfectly with a cold front that swept through town and dropped temps into “way too cold to be outside” territory. Fortunately we had the use of Peace Hall as a backup so the committee set up in the cozy warm hall and invited everyone to join us. There were quite a few intrepid souls who braved the cold and had piles of blankets with them that were then strewn around on the antique hardwood floors to create colorful squares of picnic area. Everyone dug out their snacks and settled in as the lights went out for an exciting adventure with the Dread Pirate Roberts, Princess Buttercup and their merry band of thieves.

We really appreciated everyone who braved the cold and helped to promote the movie by sharing the event info on facebook and with their friends. We are looking forward to next month when it will (hopefully) be warmer and we can enjoy the evening in Sims Park. The March movie will be The Sand Lot….just in time for spring training season! So be sure to add Saturday, March 16 to your calendars and plan on joining us for another great free movie in Sims Park!

Cavalaire Square Restoration Continues

After Monday’s meeting the whole crew took a little field trip out to Cavalaire Square to discuss our next phase for restoring the square. Bougainvillea, Climbing Fig, trellises, iron signage and lighting are all on the list. Yoga Happy Hour and Crystal Bowl Meditation events begin soon and will add to our restoration fund. We’d love to see the community support this effort to take an unused, unloved pocket of New Port Richey and turn it into a great place for gatherings and activities.

Donations can always be made to the restoration fun at the City Clerks office in City Hall.

Park it here: New Port Richey offers beautiful parks for your enjoyment

For a City with a population of around 14,000 people and just under 4 square miles, New Port Richey has a large number of City parks for you to enjoy. Best of all, they’re all free to use, 7 days a week. With amenities like public restrooms, boat and kayak launches, picnic shelters, tables, awesome playgrounds (the one at Francis Ave even incorporates musical instruments!), paved or boardwalk paths and even a special park for dogs–these parks are just beautiful and they’re all for you to enjoy.

While the parks are free to use, there are facilities and shelters you can reserve for private gatherings and events, including the historic Peace Hall which can accommodate up to 100 guests and is perfect for wedding, dance and music events. It’s easy to reserve a space, just contact Parks & Rec at 727.841.4560.

Good Things Come to Those Who Persevere

It has been a long and winding road for the Cultural Affairs Committee over the years since it’s creation in the 90′s. Many people STILL have not heard of the committee or know of the cumulative accomplishments over its history but that is beginning to change.

We had an excellent meeting last night in which plans for the upcoming restoration of Cavalaire Square were discussed, revival of the Sister City Program, the creation of a new classical music concert series thanks to a partnership with the Richey Suncoast Theatre, potential community activities in Cavalaire Square, and plans for the future Silent Film Festival. We also had reports from several committee members of local groups and organizations expressing interest in joining with us in our efforts to shake things up in NPR.

It was also a pleasure to have guests from our community join us as well, a nice combination of new residents and native NPRites, who also see the great potential we have here in the City and want to participate in making that happen.

“This City is what it is because our citizens are what they are,” is one of my favorite quotes from Plato. It was true then and it is true now. The Cultural Affairs Committee members have put their time, money, energy, hearts and souls into changing the face of New Port Richey….and we’re seeing more and more citizens joining with us who want to make a difference too. The energy & support we get from you helps us all to keep moving forward. Together we can make NPR a better place to live, work and play….for everyone.

With a new season comes a new screen!

So for those of you that have watched the movies in Sims Park for the past three years you probably have noticed our clever way of constructing the screen. The current drop cloth and cinder block method proved useful and cost effective but through a private donation we were finally able to purchase an actual movie screen. No more wavy movie scenes or worries of the current tears getting any large. Come out and see the new screen Feb 17th at its inagural showing.

Great news, the City of New Port Richey has granted permission for the city committees to seek sponsorship to fund special public events! The Cultural Affairs Committee is really excited about this because it means we can now plan ahead for our movie series….and that’s good news for you!

20th Annual Children’s Art Festival & Holiday Joy

If Black Friday shopping, putting up the Christmas lights and tress didn’t get you into the Holiday mood, this weekend sure will! Come on down to Sims Park in downtown New Port Richey and you will see a huge assortment of artwork from students all over West Pasco, hear Holiday music being performed by area choral groups and….we hear Santa will be making his first appearance of the year!

The entire event is FREE and open to the public. Enjoy some art and relax by the river. We’ll even have some hot cocoa to keep you warm!

NPR Parks and Rec Marketing Plan & User Fee Meetings

The Parks and Recreation Department of New Port Richey will hold a Marketing Plan and User Fee Meeting on Wednesday and Thursday, October 5 and 6 at the Recreation and Aquatic Center. The public is invited to take part in these meetings.

Stake holders will meet City consultants Ballard*King and Associates on Wednesday, October 5 at 5:30pm, and the Focus Group’s meeting follows on Thursday, October 6 at 5:30pm.

Chasco Steering Committee to Make Special Event Presentation

The New Port Richey City Council’s October 11, 2011 Work Session will feature a presentation by the Chasco Fiesta Steering Committee regarding the Chasco Fiesta and funding possibilities for the event.

At the September 20, 2011 City Council Meeting, Mayor Consalvo discussed his positive meeting with City Manager John Schneiger and the New Port Richey Chamber of Commerce. He stated that the Chamber’s request for an opportunity to present Chasco Fiesta funding possibilities would be honored at the October 11 City Council Work Session, and that this work session would pertain to Chasco Fiesta funding only.

City Manager John Schneiger stated, “These are difficult economic times, and the desired outcome of this collaborative efforts is that all available options with be explored.”

City Council Work Sessions are held at 6:00pm on the second Tuesday of each month in City Hall Council Chambers, 5919 Main Street, New Port Richey.
